2018 MASCI Apprentices of the Year

Jillian Otten - Friday, December 14, 2018

On Wednesday, December 12th, Operating Engineers Local 324’s Matt Gibson and Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons International Union Local 514’s Desiree Lopez were both recognized by MASCI (Michigan Apprenticeship Steering Committee, Inc.) as 2018 “Apprentice of the Year”. Gibson’s ability to lead and strong work ethic earned him the award for manufacturing. Lopez’s extensive knowledge and hard work made her a clear choice as the recipient for the award for construction.

Formed in 1977, the Michigan Apprenticeship Steering Committee, Inc. (MASCI) became an advocate for further developing and improving the apprenticeship system in Michigan. MASCI continues to create a strong workforce in Michigan through education and hands-on apprenticeships. Consisting of professionals from the education, manufacturing, construction trades, and governmental departments, MASCI provides individuals with a well-rounded experience.

“I truly love my job and have learned a lot from my team in the field,” Lopez said. “I know this is an alternative choice of work for a woman but I have enjoyed the challenge and the experience of paving new paths for women in alternative male dominated-fields.”

Both apprentices have advanced in their career paths thanks to the skills that they learned in training. Lopez is now employed at Ajax Paving and Gibson is working for Guardian Plumbing and Heating, Inc.
